Title: Digital Micrometer SOP

Purpose:

This SOP explains the proper method of using the digital micrometer.

Precaution:

This is a delicate piece of equipment and must be handled with care.

Procedure:

  1. Before taking a reading, do the following:
    1. Turn the large knob counterclockwise (opening the micrometer) and the digital display should come on (there is no ON/OFF button).
    2. Press in/mm button to activate desired reading scale.
    3. Slowly close micrometer, using the small knob, until the ratchet engages.
    4. Zero micrometer at this point by pressing ORIGIN button.
  2. For taking thickness reading of a sample, do the following:
    1. Open micrometer
    2. Insert sample
    3. Slowly close micrometer until ratchet engages.
    4. Read sample thickness on the digital display
  3. When finished, open the micrometer and leave it in this state. Display will shut off automatically (there is no ON/OFF button). Never leave the micrometer closed when not in use.
